Grupo Laberinto, headed by main singer and primary composer Serapio “Sera” Ramirez, was founded in 1987 in Ciudad Obregón, Sonora, and specializes in corridos, rancheras, boleros, and cumbia. The group made its recording debut with this style, but soon broadened its horizons to include rancheras, corridos, and ballads in its repertoire, a musical change that broadened the group’s popularity to other regions of Mexico as well as the United States. Between 2000 and 2009, the band built a following in the United States and Mexico, touring constantly and only stopping to record. Each new release in their rapidly growing library was accompanied by a compilation or a live performance. Following Corridos de Gruseo Calibre, more noteworthy albums were released, including Profeta y Otros Caballos Famosos and Corridos de Cuidado. Grupo Laberinto performed for a year and a half after releasing the critically praised 2009 album Pienso en Ti before taking a break. They started performing live in 2013, but it took almost seven years for them to release a new album. Sony released their comeback album, Empiezo a Vivir, in early 2016.
