The world’s most famous love-lorn god of romance is back and ready to spread his wings. Cupid, the Roman god of love, has been around for centuries but only recently has he started to become a household name.

Cupid is the Roman goddess of love and beauty. She was depicted as a young woman carrying a torch or, later in Greco-Roman mythology, she was said to be the daughter of Venus and Mars.

Bryson Bernard, also known as Cupid, is an R&B singer from Lafayette, Louisiana, who started singing in his church choir after being inspired by his pastor father. Despite receiving a full sports scholarship to the University of Louisiana at Lafayette for track and field, his true love was music. He dropped out of college after leaving the running team to start a singing group. Bernard’s desire to pursue a singing career was unaffected by the group’s disbandment; he went solo shortly after. He performed in a variety of settings, including talent shows, weddings, and funerals. During this period, Bernard acquired the nickname Cupid for his outstanding rendition of the late-’90s 112 smash song “Cupid.” The singer’s song “Do Ya Thing,” which featured on his self-released, eponymous debut the following year, received radio exposure for the first time in 2001.

The King of Down South R&B Cupid’s gospel-tinged voice drew the attention of both local promoters and rappers. He was asked to open for blues musicians and record backing vocals for many rap records. Both of these events influenced his second self-published album, The King of Down South R&B, released in 2005 and including elements of country, blues, and New Orleans bounce music. Cupid was found by big label Atlantic in late 2006 as a result of the excitement around his local hit at the time, “Cupid Shuffle.” In January of the following year, he signed with the label, and his dance song spent several weeks in the Top 30 of Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs list. On the Hot 100, it reached number 66. Time for a Change, his major-label debut, was released later in the year and debuted at number 58.

Cupid did not produce a second major-label album, despite the fact that “Cupid Shuffle” was ultimately certified platinum by the RIAA. During the first part of the decade, he continued to record for Lafayette’s Hub City label, releasing the albums Feel Good Music, Positopia, and Dance Fever. He was unfazed by his failed blind audition during the third season of the singing competition The Voice.
