Early Years and the Start of a Career
Stewart Copeland was born in Alexandria, Virginia, in 1952, to CIA officer Miles Jr. and Scottish archaeologist Lorraine Adie, the youngest of four children. The family relocated to Cairo, Egypt, shortly after his birth. When Copeland was five years old, his family relocated to Beirut, Lebanon, where he attended the American Community School. He started taking drum lessons at the age of 12 and was playing drums at school dances within a year. As a teenager, Copeland relocated to England and attended Millfield boarding school in Somerset. He returned to the United States to attend Alliant International University before transferring to the University of California, Berkeley.
Upon his return to England in 1974, Copeland served as a road manager for Curved Air’s reunion tour, a progressive rock band. He was the band’s drummer for the following two years.
The Police Department
Copeland, Sting, and guitarist Henry Padovani formed the Police in 1977, and the band went on to become one of the most popular bands of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Prior to the release of their first album, the group’s track selection was mainly made up of Copeland’s songs, including their first hit, “Fall Out.” “Contact,” “Does Everyone Stare,” “Darkness,” “Bombs Away,” and “On Any Other Day,” the latter of which also included his lead vocals, are some of Copeland’s most well-known songs with the Police. Copeland has collaborated with Sting on numerous songs, including “Re-Humanize Yourself,” “Landlord,” and “Peanuts.”
The Police split up in 1986, but reformed in 2007 for a performance of their song “Roxanne” at the Grammy Awards. They went on to celebrate their 30th anniversary with a one-time reunion tour that spanned five continents and featured 151 performances. Copeland directed “Everyone Stares: The Police Inside Out,” a documentary that debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in 2006.

Copeland started making songs under the alias Klark Kent while still with the Police. In 1978, he recorded a series of songs as Kent, including “Don’t Care,” which charted in the United Kingdom. In 1980, Copeland published “Klark Kent: Music Madness from the Kinetic Kid,” a 10-inch green vinyl record. He sang lead and backup vocals and played every instrument on the record, from drums and guitar to piano and kazoo.

Copeland has written music for a variety of media in addition to cinema. He composed the soundtracks for television shows such as “The Equalizer,” “Dead Like Me,” and “The Amanda Show,” among others. He also wrote music for ballets such as “Casque of Amontillado,” “King Lear,” and “Emilio,” as well as the opera “Holy Blood and Crescent Moon.” Copeland was commissioned to compose the musical soundtrack for the video game “Spyro the Dragon” in 1998, and he went on to do it for four of the game’s sequels as well.
