Immortal Technique was born Felipe Coronel at a military hospital in Lima, Peru, in 1978. He and his parents moved to Harlem when he was two years old. He began rapping at the age of nine, but did not pursue it seriously until he was in high school. Despite his history of getting into and out of trouble as a teenager, Tech was admitted to Penn State University. However, before he could complete his freshman year, he was arrested and spent a year in jail. He started studying the lives and teachings of Black and Latino revolutionaries like Che Guevara and Malcolm X, as well as dedicating himself to songwriting, while he was there. He went back to New York after being released on parole in 1999, where he spent his days working different jobs and his evenings fighting other rappers, a venue that enabled him to showcase his aggressive, vituperative approach.
Concerned that he was being labeled as a one-trick pony, Tech began composing full songs, finding beats to accompany them, and ultimately releasing Revolutionary, Vol. 1 in 2001. (an album that was later re-released by his own company, Viper Records, in 2004 and Babygrande in 2005). The record, along with his tireless work ethic, won him a place as The Source’s “unsigned hype” in November 2002, and he released his second album, Revolutionary, Vol. 2, the following year. Despite promising that his third album would be released in 2005, fans didn’t get any new material from Immortal Technique until the summer of 2007, when the full-length The Middle Passage was released.
