David Gates is an American musician who was born in 1961. He has released 16 albums since he started his music career in 1979.
David Gates is a composer, pianist, singer, and producer who was a member of the famous late-’60s/early-’70s soft rock band Bread. “Popsicles and Icicles,” a famous Murmaids song, was his first success as a composer. Gates was born to a band director and a piano instructor in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He was up surrounded by music and by the time he was in high school, he was competent on piano, bass, and guitar. When Chuck Berry arrived to Tulsa in 1957, he gave him a musical break; Gates’ first song, “Jo-Baby,” was with Chuck Berry. Gates wrote the song for Jo Rita, his high school love, with whom he married and had children while attending the University of Oklahoma. The family relocated to Los Angeles in 1961, where Gates began a career as a songwriter and producer. He collaborated with Elvis Presley, Bobby Darin, and Merle Haggard towards the end of the 1960s, and produced Glenn Yarbrough’s smash “Baby the Rain Must Fall” in 1965.
Bread was formed in 1968 by Gates, James Griffin, Robb Royer, and subsequently drummer Michael Botts and pianist Larry Knechtel, when he realized that the only way his songs would be recorded was if he sang them himself. Bread, the group’s debut album, was published in 1969 and had the singles “It Don’t Matter to Me” and “Dismal Day,” while On The Waters, their second album, included “Make It with You.” Bread’s soft rock songs became their hallmark, and they became legends. With the release of Manna in 1971, which featured the blockbuster song “If,” he achieved even more fame and notoriety. Following the success of the albums Guitar Man and Baby, I’m-a Want You, the band members went their own ways, and following the dissolution of Bread in 1973, they followed their own individual interests and careers, but the band reformed in 1977 to release the album Lost Without Your Love.
