Elida Reyna (also known as “La Reina del Valle Mágico”) is a Grammy-nominated tejano singer from San Antonio, Texas. Despite being born in San Antonio, Reyna grew up in Mercedes, Texas. The music of tejano and norteo groups such as La Mafia, Grupo Mazz, and particularly Laura Canales were both saturated with and profoundly impacted her at home.
In the Rio Grande Valley, she founded the band Elida y Avante (EYA) when she was 20 years old. They quickly gained a following for their high-energy, emotive performances, opening for a number of top-tier acts, including La Mafia, whose company, Voltage Entertainment, signed them to a record contract. Atrevete, their first album, was released in 1994 and included the smash song “Luna Llena.” The record went gold, and the band won the Tejano Music Awards for Rising New Artist and Reyna for Rising Female Vocalist.
Following that, the band suddenly departed Voltage, signing with Tejas Records for its (and the label’s) second release, Algo Entero in 1997, followed by EYA in 1998, and earning another gold record. Despite the fact that the classic ranchera “Duele” first debuted on EYA in 1998, Reyna went on to have a big success with it in 2000. For that calendar year, she won Female Vocalist of the Year, Female Entertainer of the Year, and Song of the Year at the Tejano Music Awards, and she spent the following two years on the road. With Muevete, Reyna resumed recording. Las 3 Divas was founded in 2005 by her, Shelly Lares, and Stefani Montiel, and they released a self-titled album in 2006, which included the song “La Cumbia del Oeste.”
Luna Llena, her solo album, was released the following year, followed by No Eres Para Mi and Mis Raizes. EYA began recording a new album in 2004 and released Magico in 2006, which included the hit title song. It was followed by a tour in the United States and the release of their studio album Domingo in 2008 on their new label, Freddie Records. The band embarked on a lengthy worldwide tour, performing at venues throughout the globe, from the United States to Europe and Asia. In late 2008 and 2009, a hits collection and a live album were released, respectively.
The publication of EYA’s studio album Fantasia in 2010 was a watershed moment for the band. It was the first time a female-fronted artist has won the Latin Grammy for Best Album of the Year since Selena. In 2011, she and the band were inducted into the Tejano Roots Hall of Fame, and the CD Simplemente EYA was published. Contigo Descubri and another hits compilation were released in 2012, followed by the Billboard-charting EYA Nation in 2013.
