Gym Class Heroes, from upstate New York, combine elements of rap, rock, R&B, and funk into a coherent and melodious sound. Their remarkable musical skill has garnered them a wide range of fans. They don’t fit neatly into any one genre, and they often perform alongside indie rock and pop-punk bands. Their music is based in conventional hip-hop, but they use live instruments instead of looping samples or rhythms. Lyrics are often socially aware, yet they also include comedy and sharp perceptiveness. The band’s origins may be traced back to 1997 in Geneva, New York, when MC Travie McCoy and drummer Matt McGinley met in gym class. The pair collaborated with various musicians to develop a new hip-hop palette before becoming Gym Class Heroes in 2001 with the inclusion of guitarist Milo Bonacci and bassist Ryan Geise. They recorded The Papercut Chronicles in 2003 while on the road continuously, and it grabbed the attention of Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boy before it was even completed. By September 2004, the Heroes had been signed to his Decaydance subsidiary, Fueled by Ramen, and Bonacci had been replaced by guitarist Disashi Lumumba-Kasongo. The Papercut EP, a four-song teaser for The Papercut Chronicles, was released in February 2005, with Eric Roberts replacing Geise on bass. The group spent the spring touring with Midtown, Fall Out Boy, and the Academy Is…, as well as attending the SXSW, Bamboozle, and Warped Tour festivals. They also opened for ska-punks Streetlight Manifesto for a portion of the summer. Before Fearless’ follow-up, Punk Goes 90s, was released in July 2006, a Red Hot Chili Peppers cover song was contributed to the collection.
S*A*M (Method Man, the Sounds) and Sluggo (aka session bassist Dave Katz) created As Cruel as School Children, which was co-produced by Fall Out Boy singer Patrick Stump. William Beckett from the Academy Is… and Speech from Arrested Development made cameo appearances on the CD. They spent the summer on the Warped Tour, promoting the album. The release of Cupid’s Chokehold/Breakfast in America, which reached number four on Billboard’s Hot 100 and was in continuous rotation on radio and MTV throughout the spring of 2007, raised Gym Class Heroes’ reputation significantly. The trio returned to the studio in 2008 to record The Quilt, which included guest performances by Lil Wayne, Busta Rhymes, and Daryl Hall himself, after headlining a seven-week U.S. tour dubbed the Daryl Hall for President Tour ’07. Following that, the band took some time off to focus on other projects, with McCoy releasing his solo album Lazarus and McGinley playing drums for Kill the Frontman. Gym Class Heroes reunited in 2011 to record Papercut Chronicles II, a follow-up to their 2003 label debut.
