Midnight Grace Potter is a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist (mainly Hammond B-3 and guitar) who debuted in the early 2000s as a solo artist and with her band the Nocturnals. She is a bluesy, roots rock expert with a strong voice. With their eponymous third studio album, released in 2013, the band went widescreen, combining country and heartland rock with powerful Memphis-style rhythms. With the Midnight LP in 2015, she returned to her solo career, followed by Daylight in 2019.

Grace Potter was born in Waitsfield, Vermont, into a family that encouraged her artistic pursuits in everything from music to theater. She was studying theater at St. Lawrence University when drummer Matt Burr heard her singing at an open-mike night in 2002 and asked if she would join him in forming a band. She refused, but when her high school buddy and bass player Courtright Beard arrived in their college, she reconsidered, and the three of them started writing and performing jazz-influenced tunes, with Potter taking over the Hammond B-3. Soon after, guitarist Scott Tournet joined the band, and the members, now known as Grace Potter & the Nocturnals (due to their late-night rehearsal habits), started to seriously consider pursuing music as a profession. When Burr graduated in 2003, they decided to return to Vermont, to some property owned by Potter’s parents, and devote themselves more completely to their art, replacing Beard (who opted to remain in school) with Bryan Dondero.

Original Soul Original Soul, their self-released first album from 2004, received good reviews and similarities to Norah Jones and early Bonnie Raitt. Major-label offers followed, but the band chose to grow its fan base via continuous touring and festival appearances. Grace Potter & the Nocturnals signed to Hollywood Records soon after their second album, Nothing But the Water (also self-published) was released in 2005. This Is Somewhere, their third full-length album, was released nationally in August 2007. Grace Potter & the Nocturnals was released in 2010, and Hollywood went all out to break the band worldwide. They traveled nonstop for the next year and a half, releasing a four-song Christmas EP, a live album in the United Kingdom, and a digital-only collection filmed live at the Fillmore. “You and Tequila,” Potter’s duet with Kenny Chesney, was nominated for Single of the Year Vocal Collaboration at the American Country Awards, and the two performed it at the Country Music Association Awards. Grace Potter & the Nocturnals released their new studio album, The Lion the Beast the Beat, in June of 2012. The Lion the Beast the Beat, which peaked at number 17 on the Billboard 200, garnered the most attention of any Nocturnals album to date, but Potter chose to go solo for her next album, 2015’s Midnight. The album was released in August of 2015, and it was produced by Eric Valentine, who also co-wrote several of the tracks. In 2019, she reunited with Valentine in the studio for the emotionally charged Daylight, which came after the Nocturnals’ formal split, a divorce, a marriage, and the birth of her first child. Potter released the poignant one-off song “Eachother” in 2020, which included Jackson Browne, Marcus King, Jess Wolfe, and Holly Laessig of Lucius on guest vocals.
