Chaka Demus & Pliers is an American hip hop duo from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The group consists of Chaka Khan and Demus. They are known for their hit song “This Is My Night” which peaked at number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1982. Their debut album, “Pliers”, was released in 1983 and reached number 2 on the UK Albums Chart.
Chaka Demus (born John Taylor in Kingston, Jamaica in August 1963) and smooth-toned singer Pliers (born Everton Bonner in Rockhall Hills, Jamaica on April 4, 1963) have teamed up to form one of the most popular duos in Jamaican music history. Chaka Demus & Pliers, the first Jamaican artist to achieve three consecutive songs in the Top Five of the British music charts, have continued to make their mark. Chaka Demus & Pliers are “sexy, soulful, and poppy enough to be saleable to U.S. R&B blandoids but yet tough enough to provoke gunfire and cries of “Murder” back in the Kingston dancehalls,” according to reggae website Real Groove.
Prior to merging their talents, both Chaka Demus and Pliers had built successful solo careers. Demus, who grew up in Kingston’s Waterhouse neighborhood, got his start as a DJ for the Roots Majestic sound system. Although he made his music debut with the King Jammy-produced song “Increase Your Knowledge,” his first success came in 1986 with a duet with Admiral Bailey called “One Scotch.” “Everybody Loves Chaka,” a duet with Yellowman, “Bring It to Me,” a duet with deejay/vocalist Scottie, and “Everybody Loves Chaka” and “Chaka on the Move,” all solo recordings, were among his following successes.
Pliers created solo successes including “Snake in the Grass” and “Bam Bam,” a hip-hop remake of a Toots & the Maytals song, with producers like King Jammy, Winston Riley, King Tubby, Black Scorpio, and Coxsone Dodd. Demus remembered his first response to hearing Pliers in a 1998 interview. He remarked, “The guy has a beautiful melodic voice.” “I knew I could blend with him if I listened to him and myself at the same time.”
Chaka Demus & Pliers scored their first big success, “Murder She Wrote,” produced by Sly & Robbie, which Pliers had previously recorded as a soloist, after working on “Gal Wine” for producer Ossie Hibbert, “Brenda” for producer Ranking Joe, and “Rough This Year” for producer Blackbeard. “Tease Me,” their following song, spent three months in the British Top Ten, peaking at number three, and selling more than 300,000 copies. Following “Tease Me,” “She Don’t Let Nobody,” a Curtis Mayfield cover, and “Twist and Shout,” a version of the Isley Brothers and Beatles song recorded with Jack Radics and Sly & Robbie’s Taxi Gang, entered the British Top Five. Tease Me, the duo’s first album, was released in January 1994 and included six songs as well as a new rendition of George Clinton’s hymn “One Nation Under Groove.” She Don’t Let Nobody, their second album, was released in 1995 and reached number four on the British album charts. In 1996, they released their third album, For Every Kinda Person.
After a long hiatus from the studio, the pair returned in 2001 with the RAS album Help Them Lord. Various labels released Trouble and War (2003), Back Against the Wall (2005), and So Proud (2008), while the pair continued to travel and play at festivals.
